Heber Valley Camp

More Frequently Asked Questions~

Is this a full-time or part-time service mission?

Heber Valley Camp (HVC) is a Full-time Church Service Mission.

What is the length of our full-time mission service?

Missionaries will serve two consecutive six-month summer seasons. This helps provide consistency from year to year.

Do Missionaries at HVC attend MTC at Provo?

No.  HVC Priesthood, HVC Team Leaders, and Young Women leaders will conduct a “Heber Valley Camp-MTC” the first full week of your HVC mission.  Additional training will be presented by the Operations Managers and your Team Leaders once we move to the mountain.

Where will we live?

 There are two options:

·              Provide your own camp trailer or other RV.

·              Rent a missionary cabin owned by HVC (limited number assigned by the Managing Director).

PLEASE NOTE: There is parking for ATV trailers and/or vehicles in designated parking areas at camp. However, parking areas are very limited, so please plan accordingly. A small 10’ x 10’ canopy, without sides (no logos preferred), that blends into the surroundings, is acceptable to protect ATVs.  Please keep campsite decor simple to maintain the loveliness of our sacred mountain. Please leave bird feeders at home as DNR indicates they attract bears into our camps.

How much is rent and what is included?

$300 per month* – for missionaries bringing their own trailer/RV. RV pads and hookups provided.

$600 per month* – for missionaries assigned to HVC cabins.

*All utilities are covered in the rent, including gas for ATVs.  An on-site laundry facility (located in Sunset Village) is available for missionary use at no cost.

Do we have P-days?

Yes! Your Zone Leader will assign the day of the week that will be your P-day. It will start the night before, when you have completed your service assignment (not before 3:00 p.m.), and go until 10:00 p.m., the night of your assigned P-day. You are welcome to leave the mountain on your P-day. Missionaries may also go off the mountain on Saturday nights after 5:00 p.m., or another evening if your service assignment requires that you be on the mountain Saturday night.  This will be coordinated by your Zone Leader.

Can we have visitors?

During the summer season, visitors are limited. Family and friends may visit you on Saturdays after 5:00 p.m. or on Sundays after your church assignments are completed. Visitors are welcome to attend church with you, although we do not provide Primary or Youth Programs.

What do missionaries wear at HVC?

While at camp, the standard uniform will consist of blue jeans. Non-cotton hiking pants (blue, gray, or khaki) are also allowed (no cargo pants).  Comfortable mountain working/walking shoes of your choice, and one of the many official HVC shirts and jackets.

NOTE:  Proper grooming habits should be followed using the example set by the General Authorities and Church auxiliary leaders (no facial hair). Remember, you are a representative of the Lord and we invite you to dress and groom accordingly.

Where will we be assigned to serve?

Missionaries will be interviewed by HVC Priesthood leadership before team assignments are made.  Medical issues, physical abilities, interests, and past work experience and expertise will be considered as the Priesthood leadership prayerfully select your specific team assignment.  Here are a few of the service assignments at HVC.  (Your assigned area may change during the year)\

o   Building Maintenance

o   Camp Hosts

o   Challenge Course

o   Grounds Maintenance

o   Legacy Lake

o   Mountain Maintenance

o   Public Safety

o   Tomahawk Toss

PLEASE NOTE: Camp Ground hosts, Challenge Course, Legacy Lake, and Tomahawk Toss missionaries have direct contact with the Young Women. Regardless of the assignment you receive, you will have opportunities and time in your work schedule to assist with, and bear testimony to, the Young Women and other campers. During the summer you will also have the opportunity to assist at the five Challenge Courses, Legacy Lake, and Tomahawk Toss. From time to time, Sisters (accompanied by their husband) will be asked to give a 30-minute presentation titled “I feel my Savior’s Love,” where the missionary couple will have the opportunity to lead a discussion and bear testimony.

Where will missionaries attend church?

A Seasonal Branch is organized for those serving at camp.  HVC missionaries will temporarily attend church in Heber City (location and time to be determined), after the first week of camp. Once the weather is warm enough, we will relocate to the Hinckley Pavilion for church services.  Missionaries will be called to serve in leadership, teaching, activities and music positions.

TAKE NOTE: You may be asked to give a talk or teach lessons. You will also participate in daily devotionals and be invited to provide the message for the day. You may want to bring a few books or materials that will help you in these areas.

JUST A HINT: You may want to bring a throw blanket for cool breezy mornings and a chair cushion to use during church.

What study manuals do we use?

We follow the Church curriculum. Please bring your scriptures and current study manuals, including, Come Follow Me, and Preach My Gospel.

How do we receive mail at camp?

The mailing address for HVC is:

6402 East 1200 South

Heber City, Utah 84032

Please use the above address for personal mail. Mail, including packages, will be placed in your assigned camp mailbox at the Guest Services Building.

PLEASE ASK YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO USE YOUR NAME, INCLUDING FIRST NAME, i.e. (Elder or Sister “first name last name”), WHEN SENDING YOU MAIL.  PLEASE ASK THEM NOT TO ADDRESS YOUR MAIL TO GRANDMA AND GRANDPA.

PLEASE NOTE:  You may have your mail forwarded to this address, but since this is a business address, the US Post Office will not forward your mail back to your home address after your mission.  You will have to cancel your mail forward with your own postal service in your area. Some businesses will require you to call and do a change of address.

Is internet service available at camp?

Internet service is available at most locations in camp.  Because of the large number of missionaries and limited internet speed, missionaries are asked not to use the internet for streaming TV and/or movies.  Cell phone service is also available. Verizon works best!

Why do we need an ATV and do we need two ATVs?

Missionaries travel to and from their service assignment using ATVs.  There are also many miles of trails for ATV use only. Generally, missionaries can get by with one ATV.  It is really your personal preference if you want to have two ATVs at camp. Many couples are bringing side-by-sides to camp. Again, this is a personal preference.  A “street legal” ATV is not required for travel at camp.  However, if you plan to go on city or state roads your ATV will need to be “street legal.” If you have further questions, you can call our Operations Manager at 801-404-1886.

Personal ATV Size

ATV trails can be narrow and windy and pass between trees that are very close.  To make the most of your riding experience, we recommend that personal ATVs be under 65” wide and 12’ long.  Approved ATV flags are one or both of the following: American flag and/or a Heber Valley Camp flag.

What about RV hookups?

There are full hookups (electricity, water, and sewer) at Cowboy Village and HVC. You will need the following to ensure proper connections, etc.

A good quality pressure reducer for your city water connection. (The water pressure at HVC is very high.)

Because air temperatures in April and May, at Cowboy Village and HVC, may drop well below freezing, you will need to protect your RV water line by placing heat tape next to your water hose with pipe foam insulation wrapped around it. You may need up to 50 feet of heat tape and insulation to reach your assigned water faucet.

If your RV uses a 30 Amp electrical plug (3 prongs), you may need a 50 Amp (4 prongs) to 30 Amp adaptor. Many of the HVC trailer sites only have 50 Amp receptacles.

Availability of pressure reducers and power cord adaptors is limited in Heber City, so consider purchasing them before you arrive. If you have further questions, you can call Elder Stevenson at 801-404-1886.
